Why Thomas White is a Great Leader for Cedarville University

In a recent visit back to Fort Worth, Thomas White, President of Cedarville University, and I visited his favorite BBQ restaurant where I heard him, after placing his order, say, “Oh, and I’ll have fries for my vegetable.” He has a way of using his “redneck metanarrative” to his advantage, but it’s not pretense. It’s just who he is and he doesn’t hide it. Why he is a great choice for Cedarville has to do with another food story.
On our way to a conference to recruit, we pulled over to a fast food restaurant. This is his food de jour, any jour of the week. When he asked about the special he found that the advertised price was not the real price. He, out of duty, ordered something else, subtly letting the restaurant know we caught them in their deceit. The dollar we saved that day was exactly the point. It just wasn’t right to say one thing and do another. And it’s this decisive desire for what is right that will make him effective. It is the doing of justice. Micah 6:8.
This post could seem like flattery or self-serving. However, it is posted in gratitude to the sweet providence of God who prepared a man for the work and the work for the man. For the sake of Christ, may both be blessed by His favor.
